Happy New Year!

2013-03-22 19.32.04March 20, was not only the first day of Spring, but also the beginning of my 47th year of life. Or as one of my FB friends put it, the anniversary of the completion of your mom’s gestation! Either way you say it, Happy new year! πŸ™‚

This has been the most interesting birthday ever. First it started with my hubby taking me to dinner. In the 15 years we’ve been married, he’s only taken me to dinner on my birthday maybe two or three times. Usually, my birthday dinner is reserved for my friend Cheryl! πŸ™‚ How that started, who knows! But Cheryl or Leslie would take me to some fancy delicious restaurant giving me some great new experience. Then my hubby would just lavish me with the most sentimental, heartfelt, cards. So, this year has started out on a different, and good foot – dinner out with my man! I was excited to go out for my birthday with my hubby! I got dressed up, put on lipstick, and curled my hair! We had a great time. We are so funny though. We do all of our talking in the car, and when we get to the table there really isn’t anything else to say! πŸ™‚ But one things for sure, we enjoy each others company with or without conversation.

The other thing to know about me, is that I take advantage of all coupons when it comes to celebrating my special new year’s day! So, TGI Friday’s sent me a coupon for free dinner – Angela took me out to dinner there for my birthday. Then Rita’s sent me (and the entire East Coast) free Italian Ice, and my honey took me there! But the piΓ¨ce de rΓ©sistance was an invite from Harvest at the Hotel Hershey for a free dinner! Who could pass that up!? Stacye and I got into Kirk Camry, and drove to Hershey, PA. We stopped at the Hershey Pantry for lunch. The make the best reubens EVER, and their dessert menu contains only freshly baked goods! Then we headed over to Cullari, our favorite wine shop, and picked up a few bottles of Cocoa Nostra (their very own delicious chocolate wine). Next we went shopping at Tanger Outlets, where I spent my birthday CASH! Finally, we headed over to Harvest at the Hotel Hershey for dinner. It was a delicious dinner that included a lot of chocolate and salted caramel. Yum!

We had a great time, and my birthday was a huge hit – with ME! πŸ™‚ We’ll do all again in September, when Stacye gets her free dinner! πŸ™‚ I can’t wait!

I’m getting older

Fun_cupcakeMy Charles County best friend, Angela, and I were the originators of real linner – you know lunch and dinner – dates. We’d go to a restaurant for lunch, and literally stay so long, we end up with a new waiter, and order dinner. Our husbands grew to understand that lunch out meant, find yourself something for dinner, because I’ll be home AFTER that! People have wondered what in the world are we doing to stay out so late, we are catching up! Angela is a great conversationalist, and I’m a great, well how do I say it, talker! So you put us together with a little food, a little drink, a little dessert, and a little chat, we can do that all day; twice it seems! If you think that’s something, imagine what our business retreats were like! Once a quarter, we would go to the Wilderness for a weekend, with our list of things to complete. In between the chatting, the drinking, the eating, the laughing, we actually got stuff accomplished!

I just realized the key to our linners, and long conversations, it’s the laughing! No matter what we are talking about – think of the worse thing, okay not that bad – we still manage to laugh. Thank you God for that gift. And, my Charles County best friend has the BEST laugh ever! It makes talking to her fun! Linners are fun! Linner with Angela – pure fun!

There comes a time, when everything must change. Nothing lasts forever. Age creeps in, and linners are reduced to lunch, or dinner. LOL!!! We’ve set aside days for linner, and try as we might, as excited as we are, we can’t get past 5pm these days. We laugh ourselves tired; however, we never run out of conversation, just energy to have it go until 10pm or later. Last night, when my friend (oops, I meant, my Charles County best friend) took me out to dinner to kick off my birthday month celebration (3/20 for anyone else who wants to get in on a piece of the action), we had dinner at TGI Fridays (with a coupon). We were seated around 7pm. Ate, drank, laughed, and at 9pm we were like okay that was great! We got up to leave, then Angela remembered a funny story. I laughed as loud as I wanted, because it was crowded with lots of people celebrating “real” birthdays. Then we finally left at 10:15pm.

We are getting older my friend. We can’t hang as long as we used to. Linners may be a thing of the past for us, but we’ll always have our 12hour linner record of lunch out at Jaleo’s, and dinner and dessert at Ruby Tuesdays! We spent that day having linner and laughs we had to move locations! Good times, good times – wooo!

AA_running_shoes“You have to know yourself!” and I know that I love hearing someone say to me, “Good job!” When I know I’ve done a good job! πŸ™‚ So, every morning after my swim, I call my friend Thea, who nicely strokes my ego with, “Good Job!” Just to hear her say it, I get up early, go to the pool, and make that call on my way home. πŸ™‚ How crazy is that!

What, or who, inspires you to action? What have you been inspired to do lately?

What’s up?!

Before April 2012

After January 2013

This is a long post full of details about my hysterectomy, and it has been approved by my husband! It’s been a different start to the new year for me, but right along with my theme: 2013 The Year of Health! I’m not really sure where to start, but I did promise full disclosure, which really isn’t that hard for me to do! πŸ™‚

On December 12, 2012 (12/12/12), I had a hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy – which simply means that my uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes were removed. Lots of people have wondered why I needed to have this surgery. Well, in 1991, I discovered that I had fibroids; so, I had a myomectomy, and six months later they started growing again. Over the last 20 years, I’ve had a series of small laparoscopic surgeries to remove a fibroid here and there. Then May 2000, I had the best procedure EVER a uterine artery embolization! This procedure allowed me freedom from pain, embarrassment, and all sorts of things only women would understand! It gave me my life back, and I highly recommend it to anyone suffering with fibroid issues; however, check into it early because once your uterus reaches a certain size you are no longer a candidate. Then 10 years later, my fibroids (there were 20 all total by the time I had my hysterectomy) started acting up again with a vengeance. I had three doctors tell me that I needed a hysterectomy to relieve the symptoms; and I looked at them as if they were butchers.

So, I spent a good year trying natural remedies to shrink my fibroids, but my uterus kept growing.Β  Then I spent another year having test after test to make sure that my large uterus (by the this time the size of a 6-month pregnancy) wasn’t compromising my kidneys, ureters, nor my bladder (which was already compressed to the limit, but had been for years). Then in walks, Dr. Darwana Ratleff, da bomb! πŸ™‚ She was patient with me as I took my time weighing my options. She was the only doctor to share that as long as my organs were not being compromised that we didn’t need to do surgery. She even said honestly that she liked doing surgery, and that gave me great confidence in her as well. I’m so very happy that God caused her to land in my path, and be the doctor to perform this surgery.

My surgery was a complete success! My doctor took pictures of my uterus and some of the fibroids, I won’t share them here, but email me if you wanna see! I think they are fascinating, and they are in B/W so that don’t look all fleshy! She said that it wasn’t the largest uterus she ever removed, but the most mis-shapened due to the vast number of fibroids. My recovery has been remarkable! Seriously! In the bed for at least the first week, then back up and about in two. By week four, I was walking 30 minutes a day for exercise. By week six, I was resuming normal activities. I started a membership at the local indoor pool to work on toning and increasing my energy levels. I lost a few pounds, but once I got back to busy as normal, I gained most of it back. :/ My no wheat diet is still on track! πŸ™‚ Now, I’m back to work full-time wishing I had taken better advantage of my time off.

My newest challenge is MyFitnessPal.com (MFP)- what a chore tracking what I eat daily. And, my 11yo niece has thrown down the gauntlet, and I’ve taken it up to abstain from sugar on Tuesdays and Thursdays. May God be with us! We like spurring one another on to good things!

So, in other words, I’m back to blogging! πŸ™‚
